Gardaí in Westmeath are investigating after a man was shot in Athlone last night.

The incident occurred last night at about 9.40pm on Retreat Road.

A man aged in his late 20s received a gunshot wound to his lower leg.

The man was taken to the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore, Co Offaly with minor injuries and has since been released.
